Traffic Light Tree at Westferry Road by Rod Allday
With 75 sets of traffic light in the shape of a large tree, it’s easy to see how the art piece confused drivers when it was first put up at a roundabout in Millwall. It wasn’t until passersby became used to the sculpture that they started to enjoy seeing its flashing lights as they drove past.
A survey conducted on citizen opinions of the best and worst roundabouts in the country revealed the one with the Traffic Light Tree as the clear favorite. Every light on the tree flashes as it should, and all are meant to represent the restlessness of Canary Wharf.
Traffic Light Tree was recently moved to a new location at Billingsgate Market in Poplar.
