Roman Ruins Largo di Torre Argentina by Mark Hintsa
Torre Argentina houses the remains of four Roman Republican temples, as well as Pompey’s Theater, making it a holy site. This theater is believed to be the site where Julius Caesar was assassinated. The site was discovered in 1927 during reconstruction of part of Rome, and has been holy ground since.
Today, Torre Argentina is a refuge for more than 130 stray felines who are fed and cared for by local volunteers. Due to Rome’s law forbidding the killing of homeless cats, the city is known for taking care of hundreds of these furry friends. Led by a group that sterilizes stray cats throughout Rome, the site has become a major safe center in the city, with a sterilization center set up in Temple D. Visitors are welcome to join in the feeding of the felines at Torre Argentina. Make sure to bring some feline food while walking the remains.
