Theater Tuschinski

Considered the most beautiful theater in the world, Tuschinski cost 4 million guilders in 1921. It was constructed by Abraham Icek Tuschinski, who had found success building movie theaters throughout the Netherlands from 1911 onward. Ten years in the business taught Tuschinski the tricks of the trade, and led to building a theater that was groundbreaking at the time. The luxurious cinema was designed to be as opulent as possible, combining three modern architectural styles: Art Deco, Jugendstil, and Amsterdamse School.
The cinema is famous not only for screening films, but for its live performances in the main auditorium, which houses a large stage as well as an organ.
When the Germans bombed Rotterdam in 1940, Tuschinski lost all of his theaters. Two years later he was put in a concentration camp and later died in Auschwitz. The Tuschinski Theater remains as a monument to the world of entertainment and the need for beauty in our lives.
