What was once an underground trolley system recently became an artistic oasis in 2016. Local artists have created paintings, sculptures, and even cool acoustics that bring out the musical potential of the abandoned railway. Strolling through the tunnels will open the visitor’s mind to the wonders of artistic imagination as an array of local works showcase the diversity of the human spirit.
Named for Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, the neighborhood of Dupont Circle that sits above the DuPont Underground lies in the “Old City” of Washington D.C. The rowhouses were built around 1900 in the Richardsonian Romanesque revival style. Diagonal avenues shoot off from the circle, with rare palatial mansions running their length.
Dupont Circle serves as a center for the development of gay identity. It was here that the first gay book store was opened in 1974, drawing the nation’s attention to the issue. It has continued since that time to be a popular residential location for the gay and lesbian community.
