Stein Am Rhein

Step into a small German town within Switzerland. Stein Am Rhein began as an Abbey that was transformed into a city in the 1500’s. The architecture has retained much of its medieval charm throughout the city. The medieval buildings have all been converted into residences with frescoes painted along the exteriors. Building facades are ornately designed, with bay windows and colorful themes that suggest another era.
In 1972, Stein Am Rhein won the very first Wakker Prize, an award issued by the Swiss Heritage Society for the preservation of the architectural heritage of a place. The award made note that the number of historic buildings preserved in such a compact space was almost unseen in the rest of Switzerland and rare throughout the rest of Europe. The award also praised the excellent level of care in which the historic buildings were kept.
