St Moritz Ski Resort

At an ideal elevation of 1,800 metres (5,910 ft) above sea level, the resort town of St. Moritz is perfect for a weekend of skiing the snowy, smooth slopes. So pristine are the white alps that the town hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948. St. Moritz has been promoted with the title Top of the World since the early 1980’s, and has trademarked the term to promote tourism to the area.
The area originally received some Summer visitors, but did not become a Winter resort until hotel entrepreneur Caspar Badrutt made a bet with four of his British Summer guests that they would enjoy it in the Winter just as much as they had in the Summer. Badrutt invited the four to return in the winter, promising to reimburse their travel costs if they did not find it agreeable. The wager was a success and winter tourism was born not only on St Moritz, but in all of the Swiss Alps.
