It’s easy to get lost in the bent-metal design of this window frame. You may find it impossible not to cock your head to the side to puzzle at it over another angle. St. Martin’s was created by the Iranian artist Shirazeh Houshiary for St. Martin’s Church. It sits on the east side of the building in Trafalgar Square. The window seems to imitate the effect that water has on a submerged object, making its contours shift in the liquid.
When asked about the piece, the artist simply stated, “The universe is in a process of disintegration. Everything is in a state of erosion, and yet we try to stabilize it. This tension fascinates me and it's at the core of my work.”
