Spui Square

What was once a body of water is now a square for book lovers and art appreciators. When the Singel Canal was dug as a perimeter around the city of Amsterdam in 1420, the waters of the Spui were incorporated into the moat. The result was a dried bed that was filled in and converted into a square.
Bookstores adorn the area, and weekly book markets are held on Fridays. Two full shops are dedicated to literature in the English language. Sundays see the weekly arts market at the square. Spui Square is a pedestrian hot spot, as it has become nearly car free to preserve to ambiance of the shops and promenades to which visitors are attracted.
