Space Window at the Washington National Cathedral

Space Window at the Washington National CathedralSpace Window by Wikimedia Commons
This attraction is out of this world. Literally. The stained glass Space Window inside the Washington National Cathedral has a piece of the moon embedded in the center of  it. It was delivered to the cathedral in 1974 at the fifth anniversary of the Apollo mission by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, who were the astronauts that collected the 17 gram rock from the lunar surface while in space. It comes from the part of the moon labeled the Sea of Tranquility.

The Washington National Cathedral has more than 200 stained glass windows with varying themes that depict historical events in the nation’s history.
The church itself was designed to be a “National House of Prayer” for all citizens to worship in. Memorials, funerals, and other events that commemorate national leaders are held at the chapel for people of all religions and persuasions to come together in a spirit of unity and respect.

Geometric asymmetries exist throughout the National Cathedral. These “flaws” were purposely done to convey that only God is perfect. Many architectural pieces are asymmetrical in places to naturally draw the eyes toward the sacred geometry that should be reflected upon.
