Sobrino de Botín: Oldest Restaurant in the World

Opened in 1725, Sobrino de Botin is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the world. Founded by a Frenchman by the name of Jean Botín, it was originally titled Casa Botín. When his nephew inherited the restaurant the name was changed to Sobrino de Botín, literally meaning “nephew of Botín.”
The restaurant still uses the original recipes from its founding days. Amazingly, it has also maintained the flame in the oven since its opening, never having extinguished the flame in 300 years of business. Some signature dishes include Cochinillo asado, or roast suckling pig, and sopa de ajo, (poached egg with sherry and garlic).
While waiting for the Royal Academy of Fine Arts to accept him, artist Francisco de Goya was employed as a waiter in the cafe.
