The last of its kind, the Sai Wan Swimming Shed takes visitors back to a time when such places were very popular around Hong Kong. Started in the early 20th century, swimming sheds were plots of beach land known for their beautiful views and clear waters. Sheds were provided for changing into swimwear, and swimsuits could be rented for cheap, making swimming sheds hot spots for those wishing to spend the weekend at the water’s edge.
In the 1960’s, there were 8 to 10 swimming sheds in existence around Hong Kong. That number dwindled in the following years until Sai Wan was the only one left. It is still a popular spot for swimming and photography enthusiasts, as it offers a gorgeous landscape and pristine waters. The shed is still in operation, allowing visitors to change and store their clothing inside.
