Taking visitors back to the middle ages, rue Mouffetard offers the simplicity of an open-air market surrounded by medieval architecture. Fresh cheeses, produce and pastries are organized in pleasing displays while quaint cafes and simple shops dot the street. The Église St. Médard has stood watch over the street for more than a thousand years, and ancient sculptures and art frescoes give the sensation of stepping back in time. Rue Mouffetard served as inspiration for Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables due to its medieval buildings and old outcroppings. The street comes alive with culture on Sundays as residents join together in song and dance at Chapel of Saint-Médard.
