The owner of New Quay’s Ocean Blue shop discovered a long-forgotten tunnel underneath the store when he went to investigate flooding in the basement. While down there, he took note of a pile of rubble in a room that was thought of as nothing more than a little cupboard room. Clearing the rocks, the owner accidentally opened up a hidden tunnel that only existed in rumors.
Local stories held that underground tunnels were used in the area to smuggle illegal goods from the shore to the inland businesses. Though the veracity of these tales cannot be ascertained, the tunnel beneath Ocean Blue does extend all the way to the beachfront, squelching out other would-be explanations as to its origin and use. Carved out of the rocky ground, the tunnel is more than 50 feet long with a ceiling as tall as nine feet in some parts of the passage.
