Northumberlandia, Head and Right Breast by David Dixon
Located near Northumberland lies a massive land sculpture of a woman lying on her back. She is called the Lady of the North. The project was commissioned in 2012 in an attempt to use much of the leftover mining waste for an art piece rather than returning it to the mine it was excavated from. 1.5 million tons of earth dug out of Shotten Surface Mine were piled into mounds to form the likeness of the woman in her reclining position. It has been called the world’s largest land sculpture of a woman.
Visitors are able to hike the trails that lead to the top of the sculpture, where they can stand on the forehead of the woman and survey the rest of the work from its highest peak. It stands (or lies, rather) at 112 feet high and 1,300 feet long from head to toe.
