Made up of 16,000 English yew trees, Longleat is the largest hedge maze in Great Britain and the longest in the world. It was constructed in 1975 and continues to confusticate challengers with its tantalizing twists and turns that never quite lead where the wanderer expects. The cruelty is taken further by bridges that allow maze runners a view from above the hedges without offering a good enough glimpse to plot a direct course.
The objective is to find one’s way to the center of the maze, where a central observation tower awaits those lucky enough to make it. Dead ends deter guests, forcing them to retrace their steps. The six raised bridges surround the center tower, letting those who find them know that they are close to the middle.
