Little Jaffna

Little JaffnaGanesh Paris 2004 DSC08471 by Wikimedia Commons
This fun marketplace brings a touch of India and Sri Lanka to Parisian life. Stands filled with spices, teas, silks, food, and souvenirs imported from their countries of origin line the street sides while Indian music and fragrances are pumped through the avenues. Little Jaffna is a world within a world, transporting you to another land inside Paris.

A large island off of the coast of India, Sri Lanka is situated in the Indian Ocean just Southeast of the country of India. The country was under British rule until 1948, when a political movement resulted in their liberation. It used to be called Ceylon, only changing its name to Sri Lanka in 1972, when it became a republic. Much of the country’s history has been spent in a 30-year Civil War that finally ended in 2009.

Though Jaffna is neither the country’s capital nor the largest city, it is an important city of the northern province. The promised land of Jaffna is said to have been granted by an enchanted king to the blind Panan musician that enthralled him with melodies.
