Kunsthofpassage Singing Drain Pipes

Sculptor Annette Paul was inspired after living in Russia, where the pangs of rain against the panes of glass at her house produced melodies reserved for nature’s musicians. After moving to the Dresden district, the artist invited designers Christoph Roßner and André Tempel to help her create a set of pipes and funnels that would capture and amplify the unique notes heard by the rain. A continuous song is performed by metal and water along the house’s facade as drips become drums and patters turn into piccolos.
The design is only one piece in a larger project. Five displays called the “Art Courtyards,” or Neustadt Kunsthofpassage, invite visitors to delve into different themes around the residence. These include The Courtyard of the Animals, The Courtyard of Light, The Courtyard of the Mythical Creature, and The Courtyard of Metamorphoses. Each theme portrays an element of nature at work, leaving visitors to meander the property gazing up at the five building facades in Wonder.
