Maypole, Kettlewell, North Yorkshire by Nick Macneil - geograph.org.uk
Usually taking place in mid-August, the Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival is one of the original and best in England. Scarecrows can be seen in many forms, from rock stars performing on stage to residents sitting for tea on the front porch to citizens dancing around the Maypole. A walk through the town may leave the impression that the Scarecrows have come alive and live in their own community, where humans are only a myth. Scarecrows are seen performing every human task and project imaginable.
The festival offers an adult scarecrow trail as well as one for children. Maps of the trails are available so visitors can make sure to see every carefully crafted display along the route. The festival brings Summer living to the foreground with homemade baked goods whipped up at Kettlewell Village Hall, though it’s not certain if the food is prepared by human hands or scarecrows.
