What makes this castle stand out is that it is the most colorful one in the world. Where drab concrete walls once sat dully along the exterior, the brilliance of the rainbow shines as a beacon.
Built in the 1200’s, the castle has a history of renovation over the centuries, in which additions and extensions were sometimes made. It is also noteworthy as being one of the most ancient castles still standing in Scotland, and holds the distinction of being owned and operated by the same family line for longer than any other castle. The story of this colorful castle began in 2007, when the concrete exterior needed replacing. The Earl of Glasgow invited four graffiti artists to decorate the walls, and an icon was born. Currently, Lord Glasgow has no intention of removing the landmark graffiti, and is petitioning with Historic Scotland to keep the design.
