Renowned for its eloquent rock formations and stunning natural patterns, Hong Kong Global Geopark is a reminder of the beauty that can be created from catastrophe. Formed after a volcanic eruption, the rocks of the Sai Kung region are stacked side by side in hexagonal columns. Many of these columns stand vertically, forming breathtaking cliff faces, while others twist next to each other like snakes scaling the hillside. The beauty of the rock layers is coupled with the majesty of the peninsula on which it sits, making this a stunning stop while in the Hong Kong area.
In the geopark are also found the red rocks of Double Haven and Port Island. Double Haven is full of deep red rocks that were formed during a warmer climate period that produced excess oxidation of iron in the stones. Port Island features red earth made under the same circumstances.
Lai Chi Chong brings its own fascinating attractions with volcanic rocks littering the land.
