Like something out of a fairytale, these sunken roads resemble a time when thousands of feet tread the soft earth on their way to market. Carriages were wheeled down the oft used paths, further compressing the dirt beneath their weight. Over time, the load of so many travelers lowered the roads to become noticeable ditches, some of the sinking up to 20 feet in depth. Trees line the tops of the embankments on either side of the road, often arching their branches to connect in what makes the passage seem like a tunnel forged by nature.
Too narrow for carriages or cars, the holloways are now traversed on foot by visitors wanting to marvel at a sight not seen but once in a lifetime.
