Hohenzollern Castle

When it was first constructed one thousand years ago, Hohenzollern Castle was the crown jewel of Swabia, being hailed as the “most fortified House in Germany.” Her reputation grew rich as the most beautiful castle in the land, and interior furnishings equaled the splendor of the outer walls.
Tragedy reared its ugly head in 1423, completely demolishing the original structure. The following year witnessed the reconstruction of the Hohenzollern into an even bigger and more imposing fortification, and the next 400 years saw it change ownership regularly. Finally, by the turn of the 19th century, the mighty fortress was abandoned to disrepair after years of neglect.
A hero emerged in 1819 to save the lady from the ravages of time. Crown Prince Frederick William of Prussia fell in love with the views from the fortress walls, and began the process of restoring Hohenzollern to her former glory, and by 1850, the castle had once again become an icon for fairytale charm. It is considered one of the most picturesque castles in the world.
