Guildhall + Roman amphitheatre on the Guildhall Yard by Wikimedia Commons
When the Guildhall building decided to add an art gallery in the previously unused basement, excavations revealed a large underground Roman Amphitheater. The Amphitheater is 2,000 years old and is very well preserved. It was used for public entertainment purposes.
Guildhall decided to make the Amphitheater a part of the new art gallery, incorporating its design into the layout. When standing outside of the Guildhall building, visitors can envision what the it must look like underground, as a curved line lies in the ground to indicate the shape and size of the Amphitheater underneath.
