Green Cathedral

Lombardy Poplars reach 30 metres (98 feet) into the air in a layout that recreates Our Lady of Reims Cathedral, (Cathedral of Notre-Dame, Reims) France. The replica of the famous cathedral made out of trees stretches 150 m (490 ft) long and 75 m (246 ft) wide. The poplars are a popular place for weddings, social events, funerals, and religious affairs.
Marinus Boezem planted 178 trees in 1987, tending them carefully over the years and replacing ones damaged by deer. He added stone stretches between the trees to portray the cross beams in the actual cathedral.
A grove of Beech trees has been planted in a nearby clearing in the exact same outline as the Poplars. The hope is that, as the Poplars die, the Beech trees will mature, replacing the Poplars so that the Green Cathedral will continue long into the future for further generations to enjoy the venue.
