Measuring more than 160 feet by 130 feet, this massive conglomerate of boulders on the grounds of Barony Castle Hotel portrays a very detailed map of Scotland.
Jan Tomasik, the map’s architect, was a Polish soldier in World War II when the Polish army used Barony castle for training grounds. After the war, political changes in Poland precluded Jan from returning home, so he happily accepted Scotland as his new home. When the castle was redesigned as a hotel in 1968, Jan decided to purchase it, and spent 5 years constructing the highly accurate concrete map on the hotel grounds.
Completed in 1979, the original map had running water piped into it to fill the rivers and lakes that coursed through the concrete. It was built to scale, including mountains and valleys. Though the map no longer has running water through its pipe work, it is still an awe inspiring attraction. The Barony Castle Hotel is a spectacular place to stay while enjoying the giant map and venturing out to other attractions throughout the area.
