Gamla Stan

What was once considered the run down slums of a forgotten post World War II city has since become a tourist highlight for its medieval charm. Hundreds of buildings in Gamla Stan are up to five hundred years old. The town itself dates back to the 1300’s, the name Gamla Stan being appropriately translated to mean The Old Town.
Cobbled streets, narrow medieval alleyways, and ancient architecture draw in large groups of visitors wanting to step back into a time when more attention and energy were invested in the details of the buildings and streets, and architects had more time for beauty. The famous Stockholm Cathedral lies in the heart of the town, being the oldest church in the area.
A large public square called Stortorget sits in the center of Gamla Stan, while The Old Town itself sits in the center of the nation’s capital, Stockholm. The square is popular as it is surrounded by medieval houses. One of the jewels of Gamla Stan is the restaurant Den gyldene freden, or The Golden Peace, one of the oldest restaurants in the world, as well as the longest operating in an unchanged environment.
The Royal Palace, which is still used as the seat of the king and queen, was built in the 1700’s and continues to be a marvel of architecture in the center of the capital city.
