Erfurt

Known for its centuries-old buildings, Erfurt is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Germany. Some of the more notable structures extant today are Krämerbrücke Bridge, Erfurt Cathedral, the Old Synagogue, and Petersberg Citadel, which is one of the largest town fortresses in Europe, as well as one of the best preserved.
Erfurt is considered an old Germanic settlement, with the first mention of a name being in 742 as Erphesfurt, but people living there thousands of years prior to that. It was an important trading port on the banks of a ford near Gera River. In Roman times, the town served as a junction point for two of the most traveled roads in the empire.
