It's Going Just Swimmingly!

🔎 Claiming the title of Europe’s best preserved Renaissance water castle, Egeskov castle was originally only accessed by drawbridge over the small lake in which it resides. It was built at a time of civil unrest, and the country’s civil war that led to Protestant reformation prompted members of nobility to construct fortresses as their homes. The name Egeskov means oak forest as it is said that a whole forest of oak trees was felled to make the 5 m (16 ft) piles on which the castle is supported in the water.
The castle has a surprising mixture of elements, the exterior being constructed in a late Gothic style while the interior bespeaks Renaissance design. Built to defend, the structure carries arrow slits, scalding holes, and artillery ports. The inside of the castle is split into two sides with a meter-thick wall separating the two. If an attacking troop were to invade the castle, defenders could retreat to the other half and continue fighting. The wall also includes hidden staircases and a well.
Several gardens and mazes grace the grounds, including the world’s largest bamboo maze with a Chinese tower in the center.
Other buildings on the property are used as museums, with a vintage automobile museum, a vintage motorcycle collection, and a museum for flying vehicles. 🔍
