If you’re hoping to catch site of fairies while touring Scotland, Dunino Den is supposedly the place to be. Dated to at least 4,000 BC, the den contains carvings in the side of the rock, including chiseled faces and figures significant of the pagan worship of the day. This natural phenomenon of a site has been revered for millennia, and continues to be today. Said to be home to druids, the woodland dwelling has small stone steps that lead to a well sitting atop a den wherein the creatures reside. The Druids were said to sacrifice humans at sites like this one, and stories of fairies, druids, and other magical and often scary beings are retold throughout Celtic lore.
The well was apparently once used for human sacrifices to appease the mythical creatures, though this has not been verified. Today, visitors leave their own offerings in respect. Items may include money, ladies underwear, and other small knick knacks.
