Driving on the Autobahn

PictureAutobahn A5 with Frankfurt Airport by Norbert Nagel/Wiki Commons
Unrealized by many who have not visited Germany, the Autobahn is not a single highway, but a system of highways organized throughout the country. As Germany’s federal highways, Autobahn is short for Bundesautobahn, meaning “Federal motorway.” Just as in other countries the motorways either run South to North, or East to West, creating a grid like network that covers the nation.

While it is often thought that the Autobahn has no posted speed limits, this is only true in sections of the road. In areas where there are safety concerns, bad weather, or construction, speed limits are posted. In areas where a speed limit is not mandated, an advisory speed limit is listed (generally 130 km, 81 mph).

The Autobahn was created in 1933 by Adolph Hitler as one of the first initiatives after his rise to power. It was the first system of federal highways in the modern world, serving as a model for other countries to imitate.
