Devil’s Bridge, The Three Bridges by Wikimedia Commons
Three bridges stacked atop one another form one of the most iconic travel photographs in Wales. As each successive bridge was constructed over the river, the previous one was never demolished. The original bridge carries with it a dark tale. It is said that, sometime between 1075 and 1200, an old woman noticed her cow grazing across the river. As she sought a way to return her cow across the river, the Devil appeared and offered to build a bridge in exchange for the soul of the first living thing to cross it. The woman acquiesced, and as the Devil completed the bridge, the old woman tossed a loaf of bread across, enticing her dog to chase after the food. The Devil ended up with the soul of a canine and the woman brought her bovine to safe pastures once more.
