Brick Train Darlington - geograph.org.uk by Wikimedia Commons
Darlington was a small market town for centuries, and has several buildings of historic significance, including St. Cuthbert’s Church, which is considered one of the most important early English churches. Perhaps the most iconic building in Darlington is the tall clock tower, whose bells are the sister bells of Big Ben.
Darlington, or Darlo, as the locals call it, made history in 1825, when the first working steam locomotive was set coursing through the town’s railway. The site has since become known as the birthplace of the modern railway. This prestigious position was recognized in 1997 by a work of art created by David Mach. 185,000 bricks were used to construct a life-sized steam locomotive exiting a tunnel. The detail in the work is astounding, leaving spectators in awe at the amount of labor that went into placing the bricks one on top of the next to form the breathtaking beauty.
