Cycling in Münster

When the city center was bombed in World War II, Münster had an opportunity to be rebuilt with a new purpose: being redesigned to promote bicycle use as a daily form of transportation. Many roads in the city give dominance to bicycles over cars, often requiring that automobiles wait for cyclists before continuing on their route. Bike paths and routes accompany the roads in a well laid out system.
Perhaps aiding in the culture of riding bicycles for transportation is the college life in Münster. With more than 61,000 students living in the city, bicycling becomes a way of life for many. But it isn’t just the students who take advantage of the abundance of cycling lanes. The culture of normal residential life emphasizes a coexistence between automobiles and bikes to the extent that the number of bicycles outweighs the number of people by two to one. It has been branded the bicycle capital of Germany.
In 2007 it was found that bicycle transportation accounted for higher traffic than automobile transportation. Special traffic lights have signals just for bicycles. The popular Promenade is a bicycle path that encircles the whole city of Münster.
