Celebrating Cork’s old history of being the world’s largest exporter of butter, the Cork Butter Museum sits in the old marketplace where butter was produced and shipped. The Cork Butter Market Building was founded in 1849, quickly becoming the world leader in butter production, with exports reaching Australia. In order to preserve the building’s significance as well as the area in which it is located, the Cork Butter Museum portrays exhibits on the different processes involved in producing butter. Ireland’s history as a butter producing country is also documented, showing social and national events that influenced the industry. The museum even exhibits a sample of butter that is one thousand years old.
