Christkindlesmarkt

As one of the most famous Christmas markets in the world, Christkindlesmarkt started in Germany and has been duplicated to smaller degrees across the globe. In its hometown of Nuremberg, the giant Christmas market sees more than 2 million visitors each Christmas season. Historians have done avid research into the tradition, but there is no evidence indicating its origins. The earliest artifact is a box with an inscription on the bottom stating that it was sent to Kindles-Marck in 1628. Christkindlesmarkt is often translated as “Christ Child Market.”
The market opens with a speech by the Nuremberg Christkind, or Christ Child, a young woman in gold and white angelic garb who gives a Christmas speech while tethered to a rope from the balcony. Christmas wares including hand crafted ornaments, ceramics, carvings, and more are displayed side by side with booths offering traditional desserts and drinks. Vendors sell toys and trinkets that are perfect for wrapped gifts or stocking stuffers. And all the while the jingles of bells and the melodies of beloved holiday tunes greet the air with a magic that thaws the coldest of hearts in the dead of winter.
