The Rope Bridge at Carrick-a-Rede.jpg by Wikimedia Commons
Stretching 66 feet across at a height of almost 100 feet in the air, the Carrick-a-Rede Rope bridge challenges the bravest to the thrill of a lifetime. The bridge connects to the island of Carrick-a-Rede, where visitors can soak in an amazing view of Scotland across the water’s divide.
The rope bridge is not the only reason for visiting Carrick-a-Rede. Seated atop a large mound of cooled lava, the island itself is the most iconic volcanic plug in Northern Ireland. Created when lava pushes up through a natural vent in a volcano and then cools inside the vent, volcanic plugs can remain covered in an outer layer of earth for millennia. Carrick-a-Rede was once a well used fishing location during salmon season, and contains caves within the mound that are worth exploring.
