Step into the realm of fantasy with perhaps the most unique whimsical adventure in all of Scotland. The site in Balloch Castle Country Park will make you feel like you are walking the streets of an actual fairy town.
When Patrick Muir, a tree surgeon living in the area, noticed diseased trees in the park, he decided to make them beautiful again in his own way. Out of the dying stumps he carved masterful works of art, such as mushrooms, ornate fairy houses, and a detailed dragon. The work started as a fun project, but soon gained attention and became a tourist attraction. Muir’s works are so exquisite to gawk at that the local council has begun setting up an official pathway through the carvings to make it easier to find them all. Maps are provided at the Balloch Tourist Information Center.
This treasure trove of fantasy on display is set right next to Loch Lomond, a tourist attraction in its own right, where visitors can take in the majestic lake and a stunning view of the castle and its grounds.
